No. 49892, Driver, Charles HARDING
Aged 18
Royal Engineers, 62nd Field Company
Died on Friday 7th May 1915

Charles Harding was born in Eriswell in 1867 (Mildenhall Q4-1896 4A:851), son of Thomas and Emma HARDING (née WARREN )

1901 census...Aged 4, Charles was at Victoria Row, Eriswell with his father Thomas HARDING [40], agricultural labourer; his mother Emma [41]; brother Hammond H [13] a shepherd's help, sister Emma May [9]; sister Mabel [7]; sister Alice [2]. All the family were born in Eriswell.

1911 census...Aged 14, Charles was an agricultural labourer, as were all the males in the family. He was living with his parents, brother Hammond and sisters Emma May and Alice at Gate Lodge, Eriswell. Sister Mabel was a domestic at Chamberlain's Hall, Eriswell. There had been one other sibling, who had died.

After his death, his parents address was Cranhouse Farm, Eriswell. No pension card has been found.

He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds. That is the total at present of our knowledge of his military service. Given the time scale it seems unlikely that he served in any capacity that warranted any medals. He died in Aldershot Canadian hospital after an accident and was brought home to Eriswell for burial.

Charles Harding is buried at St Laurence's Church,Eriswell near the south boundary
